In looking for pictures for Dale’s slide show I ran across one of Dale’s Gideon’s Bible that he received when he was in the war. He gave it to Neal years ago. The Bible was dated 3/14/43 from Camp Pendleton, VA. Inside with the New Testament and Psalms were well-loved hymns, The Lord’s Prayer, and verses for life’s problems and help. What I found interesting was included a letter from the president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. It said:
January 25, 1941
To the Armed Forces:
As Commander-in-Chief I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States. Throughout the centuries men of many faiths and diverse origins have found in the Sacred Book words of wisdom, counsel and inspiration. It is a fountain of strength now, as always, an aid in attaining the highest aspiration of the human soul.
Very sincerely yours,
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Do our armed forces get Gideon Bibles with a letter from President Obama stating the value of God’s Word? My guess is NOT. How far our country has gone away from Biblical foundation.
On the journey,
Trish
